Hi, I'm Shingo Suzuki, also known as Suzushin.
A little while after my first impressions through Chapter 1 of Master of Wealth, I've reached an ending—of sorts—in my no-spending run of Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent.
In the original announcement, I said I wanted to finish the main story. This feels like reaching one goal.
I kept the no-spending rule all the way
The short answer is: I cleared it without paying.
I expected moments when I'd be tempted to summon more. But I had fairly good luck, obtaining five- and six-star characters. That made a big difference. Luck helped me along.
How long it took
It took roughly one week and 20 hours of play from writing the announcement to reaching this ending.
Considering I wanted a game to play in spare moments, that feels like a reasonable pace.
What I mean by an ending “for now”
There's a reason for that qualifier. I reached the ending after clearing all the “極めし者” stories in Side Orsterra, Part 1.
There's more story ahead, so this isn't completion of the entire game.
What stood out, without spoilers
I don't want to spoil the story for people who will play it, but it had sad turns and surprising developments that kept me on edge.
At several points, I was so drawn in that I forgot about the no-spending restriction altogether.
My party and approach at the clear
For anyone else playing without spending, here's the party I used:
- Gilderoy Lv30
- Levina Lv27
- クリック Lv27
- Ramona Lv29
- Theo Lv28
- Meena Lv28
- デリティア Lv30
- Scarecrow Lv27
My basic approach was to apply regeneration with Theo's “大治療(前全),” use Gilderoy's “決死の覚悟” to provoke enemies and draw their attacks, then aim for heavy damage with デリティア's “流し矢” when the enemy was broken.
クリック's “審判の随行者” was also powerful and helped follow up with more attacks. I think combining the characters I'd summoned effectively was what let me manage without paying.
How I feel now
Knowing there's more ahead, I want to keep playing.
In my earlier article, I said I hadn't mastered combat and didn't know whether I'd become absorbed. Before I knew it, I had! That's surprising for someone who admitted to quickly losing interest in many mobile RPGs.
I'll keep going without spending
I plan to continue the story with the same no-spending restriction.
When I've made more progress, I'll report back here.
