Are you interested in board games?
Recently, I decided to dive into the world of Othello.

Othello is a game that requires deep strategy despite its simple rules.
I tried playing a smartphone app called “Othello Quest”, but… I ended up getting a harsh lesson in the game.

In this post, I want to share my experience with Othello Quest.

What is Othello? A board game with simple rules but deep strategy

Othello is a two-player game played on an 8x8 board.
Players take turns placing their colored pieces on the board.
When you surround your opponent’s pieces, you can flip them to your color.
At the end of the game, the player with the most pieces on the board wins.

Perhaps most Japanese people have played Othello at least once?
I also played it a few times when I was a child.
However, recently I realized the depth of Othello.

I thought it was simply important to take the corners, but in reality, it requires much more complex strategy.
In particular, the timing of flipping your opponent’s pieces and controlling the board are crucial.
The rules are very simple, but when you try to master it, it gives the impression that it has a very deep strategy.

The harsh lesson I received from Othello Quest

Othello Quest is a smartphone app that allows you to play against players from around the world online.
I started playing with a light heart, but I quickly realized the harsh reality of the game.

In the first few matches, I was able to win easily.
However, as the level of opponents increased, I gradually found myself unable to win.

This app starts you at 30th kyu, but the opponents can be quite strong.
I kept winning and losing, gradually moving up the ranks, and today I reached 24th kyu.

One particularly memorable match was against a 1st kyu player, where I was quickly cornered and no matter how I played, I was completely defeated.
That experience was like receiving a baptism in the game.

On the other hand, a happy moment was when I was playing against a 3rd kyu player and was able to come back from a disadvantageous position to win.
It was a very tough match, but by not giving up and fighting until the end, I was able to achieve victory.
At that time, I was able to feel the fun of Othello again.

What I felt after diving into the world of Othello

After diving into the world of Othello, I realized once again that there is deep strategy packed into simple rules.
And I also realized that as the level of opponents increases, it becomes increasingly difficult to win.
However, I found the process of gradually improving to be very enjoyable.

There are many experienced players in Othello Quest, so every match brings new discoveries.
And the joy of winning is also exceptional.

By the way, Othello has an official ranking system.
So, I also want to aim for at least 1st dan someday.
”1st dan in Othello” has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?
I definitely want to actively aim for it.

I will continue to dive into the world of Othello. And I want to learn more and more about the charm of Othello.

私は最近、オセロの世界に飛び込んでみました。

オセロは単純なルールながら、奥深い戦略が求められるゲームです。
私は『オセロクエスト』というスマホアプリをプレイしてみましたが…。
そこで、なかなか手洗い洗礼を受ける羽目になりました。

今回の記事では、そんなオセロクエストでの経験を共有したいと思います。

オセロとは？ルールはシンプルながら奥深いボードゲーム

オセロは、8x8のボード上で行われる2人用のゲーム。
プレイヤーは交互に自分の色の石を置いていきます。
相手の石を挟むと、その石を自分の色に変えることができます。
最終的に、盤面上の石の数が多い方が勝ちとなります。

おそらく、日本人の方なら誰もが一度は遊んだことがあるのではないでしょうか？
私も子供の頃に何度か遊んだことがありました。
ただ、最近になって、オセロの奥深さに気づいたんです。

単純に、隅を取ることが重要だと思っていましたが、実際にはもっと複雑な戦略が必要でした。
特に、相手の石を挟むタイミングや、盤面のコントロールが重要だと感じましたね。
ルールはとてもシンプルなのですが、極めようとすると非常に奥が深そうな印象を受けました。

オセロクエストで受けた洗礼

オセロクエストは、オンラインで世界中のプレイヤーと対戦できるスマホアプリです。
私は最初、軽い気持ちでプレイを始めましたが、すぐに現実の厳しさを思い知らされました。

最初の数戦は、すぐに勝つことができました。
しかし、徐々に対戦相手のレベルが上がっていき、次第に勝てなくなっていきました。

このアプリ、30級からスタートするのですが、対戦相手はだいぶ格上だったりします。
勝ったり負けたりを繰り返しながら、少しずつ級を上げていき、今日は24級まで上がりました。

その対戦の中で、特に印象が残ったのは…。
1級の人との対戦で、あれよあれよという間に、どう打っても全滅する状況に追い込まれたことがありました。
その時は、完全に手も足も出ない状態で、ただただ相手に完敗しました。
その経験は、まさに洗礼を受けたようなものでしたね。

逆に嬉しかったことは、3級の人が相手だった時に、不利な状況から逆転勝利できたことです。
だいぶ苦しい展開でしたが、諦めずに最後まで戦った結果、勝利を掴むことができました。
あの時は、オセロの面白さを改めて感じることができましたよ。

オセロの世界に飛び込んでみて感じたこと

オセロの世界に飛び込んでみて、改めて感じたのは、単純なルールの中に奥深い戦略が詰まっているということです。
そして、対戦相手のレベルが上がるにつれて、勝つことがどんどん難しくなっていくことも実感しました。
それでも、少しずつ成長していく過程がとても楽しいと感じましたね。

オセロクエストには歴戦の猛者たちがたくさんいるので、対戦するたびに新しい発見があります。
そして、勝った時の喜びも格別です。

ちなみに、オセロには、公式に段級位が存在しています。
そこで、私もいつかは初段以上を目指してみたいと思っています。
『オセロ初段』って、なんだかかっこいい響きですよね！
ぜひとも積極的に狙っていきたいです。

これからも、私はオセロの世界にどんどん飛び込んでいきます。 そして、オセロの魅力をもっともっと知っていきたいですね。
